Regular vs. High Cube

If you've researching shipping containers, you may have noticed that some containers are referred to as a “High Cube” Container. What does that mean? The primary difference between a Standard height 40-foot container and a High Cube 40-foot container is a height of one foot.

The 40-foot Standard container is 8 feet, 6 inches high on the exterior ad 7 feet 10 inches high on the interior. It can store 2,350 cubic inches of materials. A 40-foot High Cube container, being a foot higher, has 2,694 cubic feet of storage space.

Another difference between the two is weight. The 40-foot standard container weighs 8,000 pounds, while the 40-foot High Cube weighs 8,775 pounds. Both containers have a maximum gross weight (container plus cargo) of 67,200 pounds.

When it comes to shipping the weight limit is the same. If you are using a shipping container for on-site storage and it’s not being moved, the weight limit doesn’t matter.
